Let’s take a look at where these lucky first round selections were coming into college! Picks 1-16
1: Cincinnati Bengals ~ Joe Burrow QB LSU
Burrow came out of Athens High School at 6’4 200 lbs as a 4-star Dual threat QB. He signed to Ohio State, transferring to LSU in 2018. Burrow has the potential to be a superstar in this league. He is now the franchise QB the Bengals need. Way to go Cincy and congrats to all the Bengal fans out there!
2: Washington Redskins ~ Chase Young Edge Ohio State
Chase Young is a former 5-star defensive end recruit hailing from Hyattsville, Maryland. Young committed Ohio State standing at 6’5 and 251 lbs and would go on to absolutely dominate. The Redskins get what I’ve heard referred to as a “Presidential Prospect”, one that comes around every 4 years. Great selection for the Maryland native.
3: Detroit Lions ~ Jeff Okudah CB Ohio State
Following up with his fellow 2017 5-star Buckeye, Okudah came out of South Grand Prairie High in Texas. Coming into Ohio State at 6’1 193 he proved his worth during his years there, ultimately making himself deserving of the 3rd overall pick. Detroit gets a cornerstone piece for the future to replace the loss of Big Play Slay.
4: New York Giants~ Andrew Thomas OT Georgia
Thomas comes from Pace Academy in Atlanta, Georgia and signed to the hometown Bulldogs in 2017 as a 4-star recruit. Thomas is a dog in the trenches, coming into school at just about 6’4 335. A surprise pick for some, Thomas is still a great pick and will be a great tackle for the foreseeable future.
5: Miami Dolphins ~ Tua Tagovailoa QB Miami
Tua was first flung into the spotlight when he replaced Jalen Hurts to win the National Championship game against Clemson as a freshman. The 32nd ranked recruit from St. Louis High School in Honolulu Hawaii brought his dual threat ability in true 5-star form. An electric playmaker, Too literally and figuratively stepped in day 1 and made a massive impact. Dolphins fans are hoping he can do the same for them and if he can stay healthy I’d be willing to bet he can.
6: Los Angeles Charger ~ Justin Herbert QB Oregon
The 3-star recruit from Sheldon High in Eugene, Oregon was the 732nd ranked player in 2016. Coming out as a 6’6, dual threat QB, he proved that his versatility is nothing to laugh at. Herbert has probably brought the most controversy among the QB prospects this year. Some consider him QB1 and some barely have him in their top 5. Regardless where you have him, the Chargers took their guy.
7: Carolina Panthers ~ Derrick Brown DT Auburn
A former top-10 recruit, this 5-star DT committed to the University of Auburn in 2016. Brown originates from Buford, Georgia, attending Lanier High. Growing just over an inch (6’3.75 to 6’5) and adding around 20 pounds to his 317 pound frame, Brown is ready for the next level and the Panthers just got an incredibly solid interior defensive lineman.
8: Arizona Cardinals ~ Isaiah Simmons LB/S/D Clemson
A surprise 3-star recruit, Clemson got much more than they expected with the 491st ranked player in the 2016 class. His size and speed combo were still apparent in 2016 as he was said to beat current Clemson RB Travis Etienne in a race at 6’3 and 205 lbs. This kid is an athletic freak and football specimen. The Cardinals found as good a replacement a defensive player as we have seen in recent years.
9: Jacksonville Jaguars ~ CJ Henderson CB Florida
This 2017, 4-star recruit hails from Columbus High School in Miami, Florida. He stayed in Florida for school and UF and will stay there for his journey in the pros for the Jacksonville Jaguars. As a top-150 prospect, Henderson had high expectations and followed through with them becoming a true shut down cover corner in the process.
10: Cleveland Browns ~ Jedrick Wills OT Alabama
The 34th ranked recruit in 2017, Wills took his talent south of his Lexington, Kentucky home to join the Crimson Tide. The Lafayette High tackle has stagnated in size, keeping his 6’5 and around 315 pound frame in perfect shape. Wills is a great tackle prospect that gets to block for Baker Mayfield and Nick Chubb this upcoming season. Great selection for the Browns here at 10.
11: New York Jets ~ Mekhi Becton OT Louisville
Surprise, surprise, Becton was an absolute MONSTER coming out of high school as well. Standing at 6’7 345 lbs, this Highland Springs, Virginia native was a beast the second he stepped foot on campus. Only a 3-star recruit and 424th in the country, Louisville definitely got a steal with Becton. The Jets secured up their tackle position that had a lot of question marks coming into this offseason.
12: Las Vegas Raiders ~ Henry Ruggs III WR Alabama
Ruggs was exactly what we expected as a hometown kid at Bama. A top-100 recruit, Ruggs showed up to play and proved his athleticism on the field while also showing off the technical abilities you want in your receivers. Staying at his lean 6’0 175 lbs frame, Ruggs has elite athleticism and this is definitely a pick that would make the late Al Davis proud, Just Win Baby!
13: Tampa Bay Buccaneers ~ Tristan Wirfs OT Iowa
With the first trade, the Bucs came up and selected a consensus top-15 player in Wirfs to protect for Brady. Tristan comes from Mount Vernon, Iowa and stayed home to play his college ball, coming into school as a 4-star, 6’4.5 290 lbs tackle. He bulked up during his time at Iowa and proved his incredible athletic ability during his time in school and at the combine.
14: San Francisco 49ers ~ Javon Kinlaw DT South Carolina
Similar to a handful of players so far, Kinlaw stayed at home for school in South Carolina. The Goose Creek native was a top-5 recruit at both his position and in his state as a 4-star defensive tackle. The lanky lineman was only 276 lbs coming into his JUCO season at Jones college, coming out of that team at 340 then joining SC and bring his weight back down to his current 305. This kid has had a wild ride!
15: Denver Broncos ~ Jerry Jeudy WR Alabama
This Florida native decided to take his 5-star, 21st ranked recruit talent to the juggernaut Crimson Tide. His lean frame was even leaner in high school at 6’1 177 lbs coming out of his second high school, Deerfield Beach. A route running technician, Jeudy will prove John Elway and Drew Lock a wonderful weapon for the future.
16: Atlanta Falcons ~ AJ Terrell CB Clemson
Terrell was the 55th ranked recruit coming out of Westlake High School in Atlanta Georgia and committed to Clemson in 2017. Touted for his coverage and ball skills, Terrell every bit of his skill and athleticism in his 6’2 180 lbs frame. While some may call this a reach, his clout coming into college has seemed to follow him into the NFL getting scooped up 16th by the Falcons.
