(Explanation of grades can be found here.)

Games watched: vs Alabama (B), @Georgia (B), vs Clemson (B)

Strengths: Javon Kinlaw is a player with an incredible first step. Explodes out of his stance quick, low and powerful. Blows up plays before they have a chance to get started. A great penetrator. Uses his speed off the snap to get quick pressures and disrupt plays. Understands how to get skinny to slip through double teams or through tight places. Productive as a pass rusher. Makes big plays. A great athlete all around.

A strong run defender. Has the strength to hold up an offensive linemen and react to where the running back is going. He’s a good block shedder, showing the strength and quickness to throw linemen to the side. Rarely misses tackles. Has 3 blocked field goals in his career. Was given the Tenacity Award for his team.

Weaknesses: Kinlaw’s biggest weaknesses are his instincts and his motor. Can seem unaware of where the running back is while pushing back his linemen. Doesn’t always maintain the best leverage in gap control. Can play too aggressive leading to bigger holes for the running back. Takes plays off. Is often seen half jogging to ball on plays to outside. Lacks a diverse set of pass rushing moves. Relies more on his athleticism than technique when rushing the passer. Inconsistent.

What we need to learn about him: Spent a lot of time at nose tackle. Could he be more consistent as a 3 technique? A raw but talented prospect. Is he coachable and willing to fine tune his game?

Scheme: Javon Kinley is an interior defender in South Carolina’s 3-4 based scheme. Usually plays as a 3 tech has played at the nose about a third of the time. Played at a JUCO his freshman year. A 3 year starter for the Gamecocks with 2 of them being highly productive.

Injury History: 2018: Had Hip surgery, missing bowl game and the following spring practices.

Summary: Javon Kinlaw is a great athlete who can disrupt the offense on all three downs. Has the potential to be a Pro-Bowler if he can get more polish.
