Scouting Report: LB Logan Wilson, Wyoming
Speed/Athleticism: Logan Wilson has some serious athleticism to his game. He has natural talent and moves well around the field. He changes direction quickly and has several gears. I think his combine numbers were about average, but his play speed is significantly faster. 16/20.
Strength/Power: Good strength from Wilson, who is a lot stronger than he looks. Shows power while coming downhill. Delivers good, bone-crushing tackles. He’s not a defensive end, but he has good strength for his size. 11/15.
Technique and Mechanics
Tackling/Pursuit: Wilson can be a good tackler, although he oftentimes aims to take people out at the legs. This causes a few more missed tackles than he should be allowing. That being said, he’s one of the bigger prospects in this class and needs to refine his wrap-up. Missed key tackles in big moments. Wilson missed 36 tackles over the last three seasons according to PFF. 12/20.
Coverage Ability: I think Wilson offers good coverage as of now, he just needs to refine it. Sometimes, Wilson is caught sitting in his zone rather than dropping and getting a little bit more depth. I think his athleticism is better than most linebackers in this class, but it’s still not worthy of going man-to-man down the field with a tight end. 14/20.
Pass Rush Ability: Logan Wilson is limited as a pass rusher. He’s not particularly great at timing his rush, and he doesn’t do well getting off of pass blocks. Picked up 7 sacks over his career at Wyoming (4 in the last three seasons). 4/10.
Football IQ/Instincts: Wilson not only has good instincts and a great football IQ, but he also has the effort to back it up. You will not see him take a play off. Always moving to the right position on the field, very rarely do you find him in a bad spot. 9/10.
Leadership/Personality: I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with Wilson at the Senior Bowl. He’s a very humble guy who loves football and believes in effort more than anything. That was the thought he impressed upon me. Shouldn’t be an issue in any NFL locker room. 5/5.
Logan Wilson is an intriguing prospect with a lot of upside to his game. I think he has a high ceiling to grow into as he is capable as both a box defender and as a pass coverage option. He has much room to grow, and the athleticism to grow into it. I’m excited to see what he will do the rest of his career. I see him as an early day three pick.
