Scouting Report: WR Quez Watkins, Southern Miss

Athleticism: Quez Watkins is very athletic. Runs well in the open field. Ran a 4.35 forty yard dash. Struggled with his three-cone drill. Shows excellent burst and the ability to change gears in the open field. He strides it out and travels ground very quickly.

Release/Route Running: Watkins appears to be a smooth, crisp route runner. Breaks cleanly without a hiccup. Changes direction smoothly in simple maneuvers. Doesn’t seem to be great at cuts, struggles to stop his forward momentum and shift his body weight. Struggles to get off against press coverage. Adjusts well to contact down the field, but his release sometimes leaves a whole lot to be desired when he doesn’t get a free look.

Catch Ability: Watkins can make some contested catches that are very impressive. Uses his body well to shield defenders and snags the ball from the air. Good hands and a good overall wingspan that he has shown that he can make catches all throughout. Didn’t see too many issues with drops, although he can struggle to make catches at bad angles (late on crossers, etc). Struggled from poor quarterback play.

Other Abilities

Contact Balance/Field Vision: Quez Watkins is a tough man to bring down. Shows good contact balance when he braces for it but doesn’t do well when he is caught from behind by his shoestrings. His field vision is normally very good. He’s excellent between the hash marks, but I think that once he gets outside of them, he casts aside his field vision and tries to use straight-line speed.

Blocking Ability: Not a blocker by any stretch of the imagination. Avoids making blocks when he can. Very frustrating to watch on tape.

Leadership/Personality: N/A.

Overall

Quez Watkins is a very athletic receiver. He has a lot to his game that has to be valued. His ability to make things happen after the catch, the separation that he can create, and his big-play potential give NFL teams a lot to work with. However, that being said, Watkins may struggle to find a place in the NFL. His potential to break big will keep him around a roster on special teams for a while, but he’s more of a special teams player than he is anything else. I think he’s a day three guy, and a player that NFL teams are going to be all over the board with between those rounds.
