#86/3 Darnell Mooney
WT: 176 lbs
High School: Gadsden (Gadsden, AL)
Accolades: NFL Combine. NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. 2018 2nd Team All-AAC.
Scouting Report: WR Darnell Mooney, Tulane
Athleticism: There is no doubt that Darnell Mooney is very athletic. He put up good numbers at the combine and it shows on his tape. Very quick, moves very well, especially in space.
Release/Route Running: Mooney’s release is football porn. It’s mesmerizing and he does it so well. Footwork is crisp, he controls his body incredibly well. His routes are just as good, if not better. He’s an absolute stud as a route runner. The body control that you want to see is there, and he manipulates defenders with his routes very well. Times his releases to be consistent whether it be press or a free release.
Catch Ability: I’m not too certain about Mooney’s ability to make catches through contact, but he creates separation for himself very well. Tulane used him as an underneath receiver more than anything, but that doesn’t take away from his deep threat ability.
Field Vision/Contact Balance: Field vision is pretty solid. Moves well after the catch in space. Contact balance is almost none existence, mostly because his size isn’t desirable.
Blocking Ability: While Mooney is a willing blocker, he is anything but an effective one. The size really seems to hurt him in these aspects.
Darnell Mooney is a very intriguing prospect. Because he has such speed and quickness, a good pair of hands and an excellent route runner, I’m sure that there will be NFL teams interested in what he brings to the NFL. However, he’s so small, and his NFL success will be limited by how big he can be. If the receiver class wasn’t so deep, it would be easy for Mooney to make a mark in this class. However, his positional group is so deep, it’s hard to imagine him making much of an impact. Expect him to come off of the board sometime in day three.
