Home of the NFL Offseason

XFL Scouting Notes: New York Guardians – 9 @ Saint Louis Battle’Hawks – 29

Week three of the XFL season is underway, and the games from a match-up standpoint seem to be a bit underwhelming this week for the first time of the season as we are starting to grasp the better teams in the league.

This week, the New York Guardians travel on the road for the first time this season to pay a visit to the Saint Louis Battle’Hawks who are playing their first home game. The Guardians are coming off of their first loss of the season, a disappointing 0-27 loss to the DC Defenders.  The Battle’Hawks are coming off of their first loss as well, a 24-28 loss to the Houston Roughnecks.

Let’s get into these notes then.

Matt Jones should probably be starting in the NFL

Matt Jones fell 5 yards shy of becoming the XFL’s first 100-yard rusher and did so in just 15 carries. He started the game with 3 carries that gained over 50 yards on the opening drive of the game that set the tone for the Battle’Hawks.

Jones was a star as a young running back for the Washington Redskins. However, fumbling issues lost him playing time and the Redskins didn’t renew his contract. Jones fell out of the league.

Provided that Jones continues to show that he’s left those issues in the past, Jones probably has the best chance out of any running back in this league to get a shot at redemption in the NFL. He’s explosive, he has excellent field vision and he’s a bigger-bodied running back with explosive speed.

Other Notes

  • Luis Perez showed the most potential out of the three Guardians quarterbacks who played today. He came into the game late and threw the lone touchdown pass that New York scored on the day. The former Division II and AAF star, Perez needs to get more playing time so that coaches can better evaluate what be brings to the team. He might be a facelift from the lack of success and consistency that they have seen from Matt McGloin.
  • Guardians running backs Darius Victor and Tim Cook are both effective backs and show excellent burst. Cook is a little bit more of the power runner, while Victor is better at creating things in space. If the Guardians don’t fall too far behind, they have a couple of good running backs that they can lean on more.
  • Battle’Hawks safety Kenny Robinson is working towards getting a chance at the 2020 NFL Draft, and today he made a pretty big statement. He intercepted Matt McGloin and collected 4 tackles en route to the team’s big win today. He needed to make a statement and show that he is a capable playmaker as the NFL Combine kicks off this week.
