Scouting Report: WR James Proche, SMU
Athleticism: James Proche isn’t going to be one of the fastest receivers in this class. He’s not going to test the best either. However, what Proche can do is be very quick and change direction smoothly and with little effort. Will probably run in the mid 4.5 forty range.
Release/Route Running: Proche has a smooth release and uses it well. Very shifty and mixes his repetitions very well. As for the route tree, Proche projects well for a team out of the slot running quick patterns relying on timing and rhythm. His slants are very good, even through press coverage, and his in-and-outs are solid. Proche was used all across the formation at SMU, but that won’t be the case at the next level. He doesn’t have the speed to win the deep ball match-ups against other cornerbacks.
Catch Ability: Proche doesn’t drop many passes. He shows good hands with space, although he’s a little more uncertain with physical coverage. Sometimes struggles with allowing the ball to hit his chest before really getting hands on it.
Field Vision/Contact Balance: Proche in the open field becomes more of a running back, something that will pay well in the future. His field vision in the open field is pretty good. Moves to space and created a lot of opportunities to score touchdowns.
Blocking Ability: Proche is a good blocker. Pursues defenders even to the middle of the field. Very high effort player. Could use some coaching to better lock defenders down, but it adequate enough to control the block and create a lot of space.
Overall: James Proche is a good overall receiver, and should receive a mid-day-two grade from me. However, because of his specific skill set, his ideal role in the league is very limited. Whatever team ends up selecting him will get a very good deal on him to play that specific role, just don’t be surprised if he falls into the fourth or even the fifth round with the depth of the class this season.
