Scouting Report: WR Henry Ruggs III, Alabama

Athleticism: Henry Ruggs III is extremely fast and athletic. Ran an official 4.27 forty, although most scouts timed him at 4.24. Speed shows up on tape, has the ability to be a true angle breaker. Takes slants inside and outruns entire defenses to the end of the field and scores a touchdown. 20/20.

Release/Route Running: Ruggs isn’t just a burner, he’s also an outstanding route runner. He owns a very solid release that has even confused the best cornerbacks in the country. Outstanding at the top of his breaks. He creates separation easily and without issue. The speed only makes him a better overall receiver. Quick in and out of his breaks. 23/25.

Catch Ability: Ruggs has excellent hands that catch through contact and in space very well. Catch radius is there, and he can make one-handed catches even through contact. You don’t really see him drop the ball. 23/25.

Contact Balance/Field Vision: Much more physical than his stature would suggest. Fights in the open field to pick up additional yardage. Ruggs is a very scrappy player. Doesn’t give up at the slightest bit of contact, will attempt to muscle through it. I think his vision is limited because he relies so much on his open-field speed. 10/15.

Blocking Ability: Has the tools to be a lockdown blocker on defensive backs around the edge. Ruggs does a fantastic job in controlling his block as well, deceptively moving people. Ruggs does need to refine his technique to truly unleash this ability and probably should add a few pounds of muscle. 6/10.

Leadership/Personality: Ruggs doesn’t have any real character concerns, he’s a very lose and enjoyable personality. Very smart, especially on the field, Ruggs isn’t going to mess up any locker rooms. 5/5.

Overall: Henry Ruggs sure looks like a first-round prospect. However, with the depth in the receiver class this season, the expectations for Ruggs at the NFL Combine will seal his fate on where he goes. He’s a complete receiver, able to impact the game from both the slot and outside. His speed is a game-changer, and he maximizes the strength with his route-running talent and his physicality. He’s a first-round guy to me, and he’s going to be a great receiver in the NFL.
