Scouting Report: UTL Isaiah Simmons, Clemson

Speed/Athleticism: Isaiah Simmons is the definition of an athlete. He moves incredibly well. His combine numbers should be extraordinary. Runs very fast, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him dip in the 4.48 range. Instead, he ran a 4.39. He is very quick and he shows excellent burst, and his athleticism is truly off of the charts. It’s not anything that we are accustomed to seeing people do. 95.

Strength/Power: Simmons shows excellent strength and power. Arms are definitely closer to clubs. Difficult for offensive linemen to contain him when he uses a swing. He can’t move people very well but he’s got impact strength. 80.

Defensive Abilities

Tackling/Pursuit: Simmons is an excellent tackler. Reads angles very well and has the speed to erase them. Does show the occasional flaw where he slightly under pursues, but his athleticism made up for his mistakes in college. Depending on what his combine looks like, Simmons might be able to make up for those slight mistakes at the professional level too. 90.

Finesse/Bend: Simmons has incredible bend around the edge. He can get so low and become almost unblockable, and his turn radius is ridiculous. He doesn’t use his hands as well as you would like to see, but he has the tools there to teach him to use them better. He has a good variety of moves that he uses to get off of blocks. 65.

Coverage Ability

Man/Press Coverage Ability: Simmons didn’t play man coverage very often in the Clemson scheme, especially not in 2019. However, the raw tools are there. He’s physical enough to play press. 60.

Zone Coverage Ability: Fluid zone coverage player. Can play zone effectively in both underneath coverage and deep. Takes away throws by positioning himself perfectly for the play consistently. 85.

Mental Aspects

Football IQ/Awareness: Simmons floats through traffic and reads plays very well for the most part. Shows a few lapses at times where he gets caught up in another part of the play, but he’s very intelligent and it shows on film. 90.

Leadership/Personality: Sometimes appears to struggle with consistency in his effort from play-to-play. That is something that will need to be addressed and monitored during pre-draft interviews. He’s a good kid, and handles himself with the media. 5/5.

Overall: Isaiah Simmons 2019 season; 106 tackles, 16.5 tackles-for-loss, 8 sacks, 3 interceptions, 8 passes defended, 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Isaiah Simmons is truly one of the most remarkable players that we have ever seen come out of college. While sometimes his motor lacks the desire that we would really like to see, Simmons is a once in a generation type player who can be a plug and go into almost any system in the NFL. He is a top 5 prospect in my eyes.
