#8 Patrick Queen
WT: 229 lbs
High School: Livonia (Ventress, LA)
Accolades: NFL Combine
Scouting Report: LB Patrick Queen, LSU
Speed/Athleticism: Patrick Queen is a very athletic linebacker. He has the speed and quickness to cover running backs and takes away the underneath throws. Should test very well at the NFL combine athletically, will probably struggle with the bench press. 17/20.
Strength/Power: For his size, Queen has excellent strength. Shows a lot of power in his tackles. Moves off of blocks with great strength and control. 11/15.
Tackling/Pursuit: Queen is a vicious tackler. Initiates contact violently and with intent to destroy. Takes excellent pursuit angles. Tackling consistency might be a slight issue as sometimes he goes for the big hit and whiffs. 17/20.
Coverage Ability: Patrick Queen is fantastic as a coverage linebacker, although he is a little undersized to cover tight ends. He plays excellent zone coverage with an outstanding understanding of the concept and his responsibilities. 14/20.
Pass Rush Ability: Queen wasn’t used too often as a blitzer at LSU, as he was much too effective as a zone coverage/spy player. When he was, he flashed the ability to time his rushes well and get pressure in the backfield. 6/10.
Football IQ/Instincts: Queen has a very natural feel for the field and outstanding instincts for a player with such little experience. He seems to navigate his way through traffic easily and without effort. A high effort player who doesn’t give up on plays. Appears to play with a chip on his shoulder. 8/10.
Leadership/Personality: Queen’s off of the field demeanor is one that NFL teams will find attractive. His father’s only son, Queen grew up around LSU football and lives and breathes football. 5/5.
Overall: Patrick Queen is one of the best linebackers that I have scouted in this class. A natural and fluid athlete, who is basically a safety playing linebacker. Some teams will find that concerning, but in my opinion, Queen shows enough strength to be an NFL linebacker regardless. He’s got a great motor, he’s a smart player, and there are teams who would love to pay him to play in the middle of their defense. He’s a late first-round guy to me.
