Scouting Report: CB Essang Bassey, Wake Forest
Speed/Athleticism: Essang Bassey shows good speed and fluidity in his movements. Appears to be a very athletic player. He can flip his hips with ease. Bassey told me that he will jump at least 37″ at the combine.
Man/Press Coverage Ability: Bassey struggled tremendously with 1v1’s during the Senior Bowl week. Something to definitely keep a close eye on as we get into this process. Very much undersized, and that limits his effectiveness on the boundary. He was bullied a lot by Denzel Mims during Senior Bowl week. Doesn’t do well out of press, seems to be much too aggressive to initial moves. He gives up a lot of space that way.
Zone Coverage Ability: Appears to be much more comfortable in zone coverage reading the quarterback. Positions himself well in his zone and doesn’t often drift out of it. Takes away throws. I noticed that against Clemson, Trevor Lawrence wouldn’t look his direction through most of the game while going through progressions. He was bullied in that game a bit too by Tee Higgins who simply outmatched his size.
Ball Skills: Just five career interceptions do raise some concerns about how well he can play the ball. He has 45 career pass deflections. He is better as a zone coverage cornerback which should encourage him to intercept footballs. I’m not sure why he didn’t create more turnovers.
Tackling/Pursuit: Good tackler for the most part in space. Takes good pursuit angles and wraps up nicely. Shows good rugby-style tackling form.
Football IQ/Awareness: He seems to be very smart. Recognizes concepts quickly and reacts accordingly. Very aware of his zone and plays it well.
Leadership/Personality: Bassey is a very intelligent young man. I think that he might think too highly of himself and not be critical enough of himself. I got a great interview with him that I posted during the Senior Bowl week.
Overall: Essang Bassey hurt his draft stock a good bit performing in the Senior Bowl, as the week didn’t help him too much with showcasing his strengths. He showed in 1v1’s that he isn’t good with being physical in press, and seems a little bit too afraid of getting beat deep with no safety help. Bassey’s role in the NFL will be limited because of his lack of size, but he appears to have the make-up to develop into a run support nickel. He is a mid-day-three selection at best.
