Home of the NFL Offseason

Senior Bowl Conversations: TE Brycen Hopkins, Purdue

I got a chance to speak with Purdue TE Brycen Hopkins on Senior Bowl media day, Tuesday, January 21st. The following is a transcript of our conversation.

Draft Rite (John Vogel): So I watched you a little bit. I officially filed a scouting report before I came down here. So you’re big, you’re physical, you like to use that size, so in your opinion, what is the biggest strength that you have for an NFL team?

Brycen Hopkins: I would say versatility. It’s hard these days to find a tight end that’s able to do the things that I can do in the receiving game. Then also come down into the blocking game and contribute as much as I can. You know, I’m not gonna wow people be driving people, driving three hundred pound tackles into the dirt. But, you know, I can still hold my ground and create holes for the back and when you don’t have to bring other packages in and you can just have one tight end out there that’s got the stamina and the willingness to do it all, it just says a lot.

Draft Rite: It’s true. What is the biggest weakness that you’re going to be working on during this process?

Hopkins: My weakness is just, uh, I wouldn’t say that it’s a weakness because I do think I bring physicality when it comes to the trenches, you know. People are a lot bigger down there so you have to exert a lot more power. So I’m just here to show that I can bring the fundamentals, you know? Keeping my pads low, keeping my hands inside, driving my feet, doing that sort of thing, you know, and just show people that I am prepared and willing as a blocker.

Draft Rite: Have you ever been to Mobile before?

Hopkins: I have not.

Draft Rite: I have not either. Same, so, what do you think?

Hopkins: I thought it was gonna be a little warmer, to be honest. It feels twenty degrees outside. I understand it’s the middle of winter but there’s a beach right there, so, you know, I thought it might look something like that. It’s okay. We’ve got some leggings and tights. The convention is awesome. There’s a lot of talent, a lot of competition around here and a lot of people who are eager to take advantage of it.

Draft Rite: Alright, man, thank you for the time. I appreciate it.

Hopkins: Thank you, thank you so much.
