Scouting Report: EDGE Trevis Gipson, Tulsa

Speed/Athleticism: Not the most athletic or fastest edge guy in the class, Trevis Gipson has a unique balance of athleticism and power to his game. There is a lot of talent to work with. Moves well, his feet are a little bit sluggish at times but he times his attacks very well.

Burst/Bend: Gipson has some good burst off the line of scrimmage. He bends well, not at an elite level but well enough to be a nuisance. He’s much better as a 7 tech, penetrating the line and squeezing through gaps.

Power/Strength: Gipson uses his power in his lower body to provide his burst. He shows outstanding core strength. He has some outstanding upper body strength, especially in his arms. Could probably use putting on a little bit of weight on his lower portion.

Finesse/Hand Work: Gipson uses his hands very well, delivering well-timed punches. He doesn’t follow up his punches too well, something that is quite glaring on tape. Uses his brute strength to push players around at will at the collegiate level and has shown us some of that at the Senior Bowl.

Tackling/Pursuit: He’s a good tackler, willing and takes good angles. He may rely too much on his upper body strength to make the tackle, not using his body nearly as much as he could and rather controlling the runner with his arms.

Leadership/Personality: Trevis is simply a hungry dude. Very respectful individual and I enjoyed my time speaking with him. He wants to be among the best, and it’s going to be appealing to NFL teams.

Overall: Trevis Gipson is an intriguing prospect to non-traditional schemes. His ability to play both as a 7 or a 9 tech many teams will find intriguing, and his personality is a good representation of his playing style. I think he’s an early day three prospect because he does need to fill out his bottom half of his body a little bit more, teams will want to work with his technique as a finesse rusher a little bit more, and he doesn’t have high-level speed. That makes him more of a project.
