Antonio Gandy-Golden scouting report
Athleticism: For a man of his size, Antonio Gandy-Golden is extremely athletic. It takes a little bit for him to hit full speed, but once he gets going, he is very fast. Excellent lateral movement. Gandy-Golden is shifty and has a nasty juke move.
Release/Route Running: Gandy-Golden will sometimes struggle to release against press coverage especially when the corner is physical with him. However, he’s very slick otherwise. Excellent in his breaks for a man of his size. Understands how to create separation in his routes. Uses his lateral ability very well.
Catch Ability: Gandy-Golden has excellent hands, and features a very good catch radius. Has made dozens of highlight-reel catches over the years. Drops haven’t been too much of an issue with him. Will make contested catches. Uses his size very well.
Field Vision/Contact Balance: Because of his size, Gandy-Golden is tough for a secondary to bring down. Big, physical runner. His lateral movement ability creates a shiftiness about him that allows him to turn the corner. Field vision is average, as he relies more on his size to create opportunities in the open field.
Blocking Ability: Not a great blocker by any stretch. Certainly has the desire to block on run plays and tries, but struggles to lock opposing defenders and secure the perimeter.
Overall: Antonio Gandy-Golden is a fantastic prospect. His skill set reminds me much of former Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, and his ability to make the contested catch is fantastic. Gandy-Golden has not only produced his entire career at Liberty, but he also has the tape to back up as one of the top receivers in this class. He’s a day one guy for me. The potential to fall and be forgotten in this class is huge.
