Jake Maier Scouting Report

Jake Maier has been one of the best quarterbacks in the FCS for the past three seasons. This past season he threw for 3,563 yards and 28 touchdowns. In 2018, Maier was Big Sky Conference Player of the Year when he passed for 3,931 yards with 35 goals. In three seasons at UC Davis, Maier passed for 11,163 yards, 88 touchdowns, and completed 66% of his passes.

Maier is a pocket passer with a strong arm when he protected; he can make all the throws on the field. Maier is an accurate passer, and he goes through his progressions well. Maier is not much of a runner, but his nimble in the pocket can make a defender miss from time to time.

Maier size is a question mark; he is only 6’0, so that could be a cause for concern. Maier needs to work on his anticipation on routes down the field; with his accuracy, he should be able to throw receivers open more often. When pressured, Maier tends to panic and his mechanic’s breakdown, and he throws off his back foot.

I think Maier could get some looks from some NFL team because of his arm strength, but he must fine-tune his mechanics if he wants to make an impression on NFL teams.
